COURSES IN NIGERIAN NAVY SCHOOL OF ARMAMENT TECHNOLOGY

The courses conducted in the Nigerian Navy School of Armament Technology are: The Officers and Ratings Courses

Sub-Lieutenant Technical Course

The Above Water Warfare module of the Sub-Lieutenant Technical Course is organised for newly commissioned officers. It is conducted for 6 weeks in the School.The training is meant to equip the officers with requisite knowledge required for watch keeping duties onboard NN ships and provides basis for deployments in the field prior to selection for specialist training.

Special Duty Post Commissioning Course

The Special Duty Post Commissioning Training is conducted for exceptional ratings who are commissioned as officers in the Special Duty officer category. These are ratings who by virtue of their ability and experience in their respective fields are considered fit for officer commission. The AWW module for Special Duty Post Commissioning also runs for 6 weeks in the School.

Advanced Specialist Course

The Specialist training of AWW Officers is the Officers’ Long Course. It is conducted for officers desirous to specialize in AWW Department of the Executive Branch. The entire Officer’ Long Course package lasts for 52 weeks, however, the AWW specialist training module known as professional phase is conducted for 6 months. The AWW Under Training Officers subsequently return to NNS QUORRA to complete the course where they are merged with Under Training Officers undergoing training in other Executive Branch specializations for the General Warfare Phase and Operations Phase of the long course.

Specialist Courses

The final category is the Advanced Specialist Course at the level of Principal Warfare Officers’ course and beyond. In the past, the Principal Warfare Officer course was conducted at the Nigerian Naval College Onne before it was suspended. At present, Principal Warfare Officers’ courses are conducted in foreign institutions, however, there are plans to reactivate the Course in Nigeria. When that is achieved, The Nigerian Navy School of Armament Technology will be responsible for handling the AWW aspect of the training.

  • Ratings’ Courses

Selected ratings of the Seaman Branch are nominated after a process at the Command Naval Drafting to join the AWW Department. The ratings subsequently undergo their specialization courses in the School. The objective of the courses is to prepare the ratings to function in their particular specializations or trades in the AWW Department. The courses are categorized into Professional Training, Advanced Specialist Training, Basic Gunnery Instructor Course and Advance Gunnery Instructor Course.
